Ngamba Island Sanctuary

Ngamba island sanctuary is located just kilometers from Entebbe near the equator on the shores of Lake Victoria. You take a short boat ride to reach the sanctuary. It consists of approximately 100 hectares, 98 of which are forested and for use by the chimpanzee. The sanctuary was established in October 1998 to care for orphaned chimpanzees that have been rescued by the Uganda wildlife Authority since a return to their natural habitat is not possible, Many of them where rescued from poachers who where killing them in numbers and the place is regarded as a safe heaven for orphanage chimpanzees that are free to live on this amazing island. And it offers a unique opportunity for close viewing of chimpanzee in their natural environment.

The island supports a wide biodiversity of nature wildlife including the chimpanzees our closest relatives, plants, butterflies, birds among other species and the island provide a wide variety of food for the chimpanzees.

The sanctuary aims to educate visitors and local communities about this amazing species and the importance of conserving their fragile forest habitat

Ounce you take a trip on this wonderful island you are expected to involve in the feeding of these closest relative of man the chimps. It’s believed that the island is a refuge to over 300 individuals which are now trained to relate to human.

Tour activities

Chimpanzee watching

This is one of the major interesting activities done at the island. The island provides a close viewing of these chimps in their natural environment and it is taken as the most impressive moment on earth. You will have a chance to see how they are fed. You will either view the morning or an afternoon feeding of the chimpanzees from the visitor’s platform area along the edge of the sanctuary fence, if interested you are allowed to participate in the feeding of apes. You will also receive an informative talk by the staff sanctuary and only 1 hour is allowed to spend with these chimpanzees.

Speed boat ride

This activity can also be arranged by the sanctuary to the visitors. It will enable you to explore Lake Victoria; you can meet fisher men and also examine their fishing methods in addition to seeing a variety of fishes they catch. Watch also different types of bird species that feed on the lake

Accommodations

Ngamba Island tented camp, the main reason to stay at Ngamba island tented camp is to spend more time with the chimpanzee, still you can see the early morning and afternoon feeding, and you will enjoy a chimpanzee forest walk.
