A PRESS RELEASE ON THE RECENT MOUNTAIN GORILLA CENSUS

The Uganda Wildlife Authority together with RDB and DRC with great pleasure recently released the most amazing news Uganda has heard this year. The numbers of the critically endangered Mountain Gorillas have miraculously surpassed 1000. The recent census crowns Uganda with a figure of 400 individual Mountain Gorillas (Gorilla Beringei Beringei), in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and 604 mountain Gorilla individuals in the Virunga Massif also known as The Mikeno Sector. The Virunga Massif comprises of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in The Democratic Republic of Congo. It has 41 groups and 14 solitary Silver backs. As compared to the survey in 2010 of 36 groups. The population of the gorillas remain relatively small and vulnerable to rapid growth if only they are left in peace

The greater Virunga Trans boundary Collaborations calls upon all conservation institution organizations and every individual to join efforts and conserve Mountain Gorillas in their habitats for future generation.
